To upload files, say like media files – images, videos, music, docs or even WordPress installation files itself, one need to know well in advance on how to dealt with as sometimes doing this easier job of uploading also turned into a tough one. With this article, I will tell you how you can upload files using the dashboard as well as via FTP.

Note: The article is a two-part series and in this we will discuss about how to upload a file with WordPress via dashboard.

Uploading Via Dashboard

Using WordPress’s online interface, the Dashboard will allow you to upload files in three ways – immediately in a post, immediately in a page and for later use in your Media Library.

To Upload a File in a Post/Page

  1. Once on the dashboard menu, click and select Posts / Pages, followed by Add New to display the “Add New Post” / “Add New Page” page.
  2. Once in, click on the icon for the type of file you want to upload on the upload/insert menu and “Add media files from your computer” page will appear.
  3. Click the Select Files button and select the file you want to upload in the dialog box. While in order to select multiple files, hold down the SHIFT key (for PC users) or the COMMAND key (for Macintosh users) and click open.
  4. When your file uploads, a field appears. At the bottom of the field, click the Insert into Post button.

To Upload a File for Later Use

  1. On the Dashboard menu, click Media and then click Add New to display the “Upload New Media” page.
  2. Click the Select Files button to open a dialog box and select the file you want to upload.
  3. To select multiple files, hold down the SHIFT key (for PC users) or the COMMAND key (for Macintosh users). Click the Open button.
  4. Once the upload is complete, a field with your file details appears. Once below the field, click Save all changes and you are done.

To Upload a File with the Browser Uploader

  1. On the Dashboard menu, click Media, and then click Add New to display the “Upload New Media” page.
  2. If you want to upload a file in a page or a post: on the Dashboard menu, click Pages / Posts, click Add New to display “Add New Page” / “Add New Posts” and then, on the Upload/Insert menu, click the icon that represents the type of file you want to upload.
  3. Below the Select Files button, click the link to “Browser uploader.” The time when the Browser uploader appears, click the Choose File button to display a dialog box and select the file you want to upload.
  4. To select multiple files, hold down the SHIFT key (for PC users) or the COMMAND key (for Macintosh users) and click the Upload button.
