You just finished moving your whole of WordPress website from one domain to another, but now what next? Are you done with the job? The answer is NO as there is still an important task pending. You have to notify Google and other search engines to keep all your search engine rankings. This can basically be done in two steps process – setting up a permanent 301 redirect and notifying Google about the change.

Setting Up Permanent 301 Redirects

Setting up permanent 301 redirects is an important factor both in terms of search engines and user experiences as it will allow you to redirect your users and search engines to redirect to your new site.

Steps To Follow:

  1. You need to connect to your old site using FTP and edit the .htaccess file.
  2. Open the .htaccess file and paste the following short code at the top of it:

Where, example.com must be your own domain name.

  1. Once done, visit your old site again.
  2. It should automatically redirect you and your visitors to the new site.
  3. If in case, it does not, then you have to go through all the steps above and check what you missed.
